Who We Are

VIA is the business association that represents the interests of all businesses involved in importing, preparing, wholesaling and retailing most used vehicles that are imported into New Zealand from Japan, Singapore and other source markets.

Our Members

VIA members include registered traders, importers and wholesalers, Japanese auction companies and exporters, shipping companies, NZ Government-accredited inspection agencies, ports, compliance shops and other service providers to the trade.

Our Stakeholders

VIA advocates for the used vehicle sector, providing legal, technical and networking support to members, and liaising closely with Government across all aspects of present and future vehicle trading. Our Government stakeholders include NZTA, the Ministry of Transport, NZ Customs, the Ministry for Primary Industries, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the Commerce Commission, EECA and the Ministry for Business and Innovation among others.

Our Successes

We are proud of our history of supporting the trade and supply of imported vehicles, and our evolution into a significant, independent industry authority.

Over The Past 30 Years VIA Has:

  • Kick-started the used vehicle import industry in New Zealand
  • Developed seatbelt anchorage systems for used Japanese vehicles
  • Developed testing and certification procedures
  • Established compliance company VINZ, to provide competitive inspection services
  • Saved dealers over $135M by negotiating the removal of tariffs.
  • Represented New Zealand's used vehicle sector in addressing the biosecurity threat of brown marmorated stink bug, and coordinated ongoing biosecurity initiatives.

Now, And Into The Future, VIA:

  • Represents the used vehicle sector in approaching major international product recalls, and their application in New Zealand
  • Works proactively with all areas of Government, to contribute constructively to forthcoming legislation and rules
  • Participates in international research and policy development on future technologies in fuel, vehicle design and intelligent transport systems
  • Consistently works to understand the outlook for the supply of vehicles into New Zealand, and how business and consumers can best prepare for what lies ahead.
