Welcome Paul O’Connor, OEM Audio founder, back to VIA

We’re pleased to welcome Paul O’Connor, founder of OEM Audio, back to VIA.

A former VIA Board member and used car dealer, Paul knows the industry from the ground up. OEM Audio was born from frustration—after years of fielding complaints about poor-quality imported radios, Paul took matters into his own hands. He travelled to China, found reliable suppliers using licensed, tier-1 electronics, and built a business around doing things properly.

Today, Christchurch based OEM Audio supplies and installs premium in-car audio, navigation, safety, and EV charging systems across New Zealand. Products include Apple CarPlay, reverse cameras, dash cams, radar detectors, and EV chargers for homes and businesses. Everything is designed to fit, function, and integrate with factory systems—no shortcuts, no guesswork.

When EVs arrived, Paul noticed how dangerously poor many charging systems were. Rather than risk customer safety, he designed and built a robust, compliant charger here in New Zealand.

OEM Audio supports a wide range of vehicles, including new Toyota models like the CHR, RAV4 and Prius, designing sound systems that match each car’s unique requirements. The business also localises Japanese imports, translating systems into English and making the cars more user-friendly for New Zealand drivers.

Paul’s return to VIA reflects his ongoing commitment to the sector and belief in supporting the industry that supports his business. We’re glad to have his practical insights and no-nonsense approach back in the room.

Welcome back, Paul.
